Combining drawing and painting with texturing and patterning, these earrings are created with hand drawn designs and multilayered enamel finishes to show off the saturated colors and luminosity of glass. Using the centuries old technique of enameling on metal and historical enamel methods, with the intention of creating richly surfaced, artistically expressive and technically innovative contemporary art and jewelry, these earrings are sculpturally formed from steel to play with light and shadow, then coated with many thin layers of glass and pigment and fused in a kiln at 1500 degrees. The resulting is earrings that “go together” but are not mirror images. Every pair is unique and one of a kind.
This jewelry collection is made using the technique of enameling, which is the process of applying small granules of glass to a metal substrate and firing in a kiln at high temperatures, usually between 1,400 and 1,550 °F. ‘Vitreous enamel’ is a material created by fusing powdered glass to a substrate by firing. The glass melts and when cooled, hardens to a smooth and durable vitreous coating, in this case on steel. Depending on the design, the enamel has been etched to a soft matte finish.
