Charms, talisman, amulets and symbolic pendants date back to the beginning of adornment’s history and have been a way to wear your beliefs, hopes and dreams close to your heart, turn away evil and bring love, luck, guidance and protection into your life.
The eye is one of the most powerful symbols in many cultures. When I was a child my mother gave my sister and me an ‘Eye of Horus’ charm necklace from the King Tut exhibit in Seattle – at that age we were exchanging colds all year long! The Eye of Horus is an ancient Egyptian symbol of protection, royal power and good health. Ancient Egyptian and Near Eastern sailors would frequently paint the symbol on the bow of their vessel to ensure safe sea travel. In many cultures the eye represents spiritual vision and knowledge. Considered the window to the soul, in Hinduism and Buddhism the ‘third eye’ is referred to as the spiritual eye or the intuitive eye and is a symbol of enlightenment.
