In Egypt the lion represented the sentries of the eastern and western horizons, symbolic of closure and rebirth. The warrior goddess Sekhment, with the head of a lion, was the fiercest hunter known to the Egyptians. She was also the goddess of healing and a protector. Lions are the most social of all the big cats, traveling in prides and guarding territory with fierceness and power. In Asia, lions are auspicious as well and protective symbols. The lion dance represents a desire for longevity and career success and wealth. Lions are symbolic for strength, nobility, fairness, and courage.
